What Is The Diameter Of A 50-Ring Cigar?

For the purposes of this chart, one ring is equal to 1/64th of an inch - and 50 cigar rings is equivalent to 50/64ths of an inch. Measuring in the one-inch range or larger, any cigar measuring in the 60-ring range and above is going to be a mighty smoking machine. A 40-ring gauge cigar is 40/64ths of an inch thick, and a 64-ring gauge cigar would measure in at a full inch (see Fig.

A cigar with a larger ring gauge will have more flavor, more complexity, and will generate more smoke than one with a smaller ring gauge. If you find smoking one cigar takes too much time, or you find you are often unable to finish the smoking session, it may be an idea to try a smaller ring gauge one. The larger the ring gauge, the more flavor a cigar often delivers, no matter how strong, because there are more leaves packed in.

The size of the ring, or thegauge, goes along with the length of the cigar, which makes up the general style and/or name. The first digit is the length of the cigar, measured in inches; the second is the ring gauge, or thickness of the cigar, measured in sixty-fourths of an inch. The thickness of a cigar--as measured by ring gauge--is every bit as important for a finished smoking experience as the tobaccos color and cigars length and shape.

The size of a cigar is measured two ways, by the length, measured in inches, and the ring gauge, which is the cigars diameter broken down to 64ths of an inch. Cigar measurements are measured in inches for length, and in 64ths of an inch for the ring or gauge. It is like you would get fit to wear your wedding band on your fingers. The industry standard measurement for diameter is known as the ring gauge, which is expressed as 64ths of an inch, though some countries choose to use millimeters. The measure may vary from producer to manufacturer, but is usually kept within a specific standard for length of the range X ring.

Most cigar manufacturers do not adhere to the traditional dimensions standards; therefore, it is not unusual to find Toro cigars ranging from 6-6.5 inches in length, with an approximate ring gauge of 50-54. Robusto cigars, considered to be an ideal flavor size by cigar reviewers, are typically between 5 to 5 1/2 inches long and 50 ring gauge. The good news is Cigar talk is pretty straight forward once you understand that the length (how long) and the ring gauge (how wide) constitute a common size or cigar type (e.g., Corona).

Whether you are a beginner in the cigar world, or looking to try something new, understanding the cigars size, length, and ring gauge is the foundational way of finding the right smokiness for your persona. Something fun to note is that the strength of cigars is not determined by cigar size, so do not fall into the trap of thinking the biggest cigar is the strongest. For instance, the cigar guillotine, which is when a cigar is placed through a hole in order to cut off the cap, might not fit cigars that have heavy gauge rings. More
