What Is Meerschaum Cigar Mouthpiece

 This Meerschaum cigar box is considered to be a new old stock, having never been smoked, and is in excellent condition. The cigarette stand, while broken, is still usable and only gets better as it gets older. The Turkish Block Meerschaum needs to go through a lot of hands before eventually becoming one of the best smoking pipes in the world. 

When you first obtain your meerschaum pipe, make sure that your hands are clean as you smoke through your initial handful of bowls. Some people recommend that you do not touch the bowl of a meerschaum pipe at all while smoking, holding it just by the stem, others think that is a bit extreme. The thickness of the liner may impact the durability of a pipe, and some smokers fail to clean their pipes, which causes the meerschaum to split. 

Moisture and oils may also build up inside a cigars case, not a pleasant effect when smoking. Meerschaum cigar holders need periodic cleaning by pipe cleaners and alcohol (or brandy-wine) to remove build-up, but, once again, over time and use, Meerschaum cigar holders will mature (since tars and other byproducts are absorbed into the stone, they are drawn up to the surface by a coating of beeswax that colors the stone). Due to the added length and porousness of the Meerschaum holder, smoke is considerably cooler, because tars and other oils from burning cigar tobacco leaves are absorbed by the stone. 

Meerschaum needs to cool down before you can clean your pipe, whereas briar needs to rest after smoking for several days, so the combination comes with some downsides to both materials. The qualities of meerschaum are merged with the qualities of briar pipes, lining the briar pipes with meerschaum bowls. Meerschaum became the high-end alternative to the clay pipes of the time, and remains highly prized today, though briar pipes became the more common smoking pipes from the mid-1800s onwards. 

Unlike briar pipes, Meerschaum does not require a lengthy break between smoking sessions, and it is safe to smoke several times a day. Cigar smoking mouthpieces may be made from wood, briar, amber, turtle, Lucite (acrylic), or meerschaum, a soft, porous clay-like material used in the manufacture of tobacco pipes.
